After I installed the update, I immediately took two of my favorite LUTs and tried to figure out how to transfer them to the camera.

Firmware update

Scouring the web came up with exactly zero solutions so after some guessing I got it to work. There are a ton to find on the web by simply searching for Blackmagic Ursa Mini LUT and by all means feel free to do that for any number of different looks you might want. So long as they are in. Once done transferring, simply eject the card from the computer, put it back into the camera and turn it on.

You can also use them in post, of course, to make the footage look just like the way you are seeing it in the camera if you use the same LUT during editing that you are using in-camera to preview.

Hope that helps anyone who owns a Blackmagic Ursa Mini and was trying to figure that out. Let me know if it did in the comments below. Thanks for reading!

Thanks for this great tutorial! I just got up and running with my Ursa Mini 4. Then in Premire, when I applied the LUT, the image was super saturated and overexposed, and looked nothing like what I was monitoring while shooting the ungraded clip was fine before LUT. Any idea what went wrong? I had a IR cut and ND filter on my lense, would that mess with things?

Thanks for any help. Otherwise if you shoot in Video color for example it has color baked in already and your LUT you put on top will add on top of that color, making it double colored and mess it up.

Great tutorial but I have a question. I loaded a. Just the standard film to Rec. Am i missing something obvious. Posted by David Cogen. Wednesday, November 16th, Related Items: blackmagicfilming. Even though 13 may not be a huge number, in my experience I noticed that very often it introduces a green color cast. This is how you get the most out of your camera. In the second example, the same yellowish look is very predominant while Origami LUT keeps skin tones very rich and organic. Working with Origami LUT is very simple! Just adjust exposure in the node before the LUT and continue color grading from there!

The build-in LUT that supplied with the cameras is very inaccurate and degrades the overall look of your image forcing a user to do extra adjustments prior to starting the work. Extra nodes, means extra time and computer resources. Few nodes may not sound like a lot, but once you have a solid documentary or feature film, it may result in potential extra hours of rendering. Once you are happy with the results, you can add a node after the LUT to continue your work. Comments are closed.

I Accept. The idea was to have a smaller and lighter camera that would live on a gimbal. On receiving the camera I proceeded to profile the sensor using the techniques I had previously used to profile the Alexa sensor and various film stocks.

I then used this data to build a custom 3x3 matrix that accurately matches both cameras. This is the same method used by high-end post houses to match digital cameras. And it offers many benefits over using a LUT. To find out why, read The Creation Process below. Check the Update History at the bottom of the page for more info.

F-stop range F5. Both cameras shot at ISO The P6K images feature exposure adjustments only. The Alexa images are untouched. As mentioned earlier, the P6K sensor was profiled with the same process used to profile the Alexa and various film stocks. This process involves shooting a variety of charts at different exposures covering the entire dynamic range of the sensor or film stock. The charts feature swatches that cover the full degrees of hue, each at a variety of saturation levels.

The goal is to present the sensor or stock with as much image data as possible. In the end this process generates around 14, data points per camera. Because this is done with a matrix, the results are closer to a technical transform than a simple look match LUT or even a complex profiled match LUT. Which is why it works well for matching digital to film. For matching digital to digital, this is an unnecessarily complex, inflexible method that has many downsides.

LUTs generated by this method are in a way a snapshot of the exact conditions under which the LUT was created. The further the footage moves away from these precise conditions the less accurate the LUT becomes. A technical transform match is different.

Rather than being concerned with precise x colour becomes y colour, a technical transform uses a matrix to reshape the entire colour response of one sensor to match the colour response of another sensor.

When matching two digital sensors this is a cleaner and far more elegant approach. The transform is actually very similar to a CST. A crucial part of the transform process involves linearising the BMD Film footage and returning it to scene linear, which is the native way the sensor sees light. In addition, the LUT strives to preserve highlight and shadow detail [with emphasis on softer highlight roll off] while safeguarding image quality and integrity.

Though it's not free, It's still cheaper than a Golden Arches Meal and definitely worth a look even if it's just to see more examples of how the LUT works. Thank you, Will. It's probably one of the most, dare I say "recognised" Blackmagic clips on the web! Quick before and after video under harsh conditions. No other Adjustments. However with the Ursa I've found that a few adjustments need to made mainly to shadows and saturation when used with the LUT.

The BEST LUTs For BMPCC4K & URSA Mini Pro! LOG to REC709

The LUTs that Blackmagic provides are too contrast and they lose all the details in the highlights and shadows. This is specially annoying when using a LUT in one of the Blackmagic cameras for proper viewing so you can pull focus and judge the exposure. That is why I created my custom LUT that I used both in the camera but also as a starting point in post production grading. It has been 3 years and since then I have created several more versions of my LUT. This new version fixes a few issues I found specially with really saturated cyan colors that used to brake down with my first generation LUT.

Along with some fixes in the shadows to keep the noise levels down. This results in a nightmare in post production when I try to cut from one camera to another.

Ive been working on a solution to this over the last few months, constantly tweaking the look. Of course all of this is depends if you shot the same scene on the different cameras with the same settings, specially when it comes to white balance and exposure.

Keep in mind that using different manufacturers lenses on each camera will also introduce a slight color shift that you will have to accommodate for in post. If that is the case then you can still apply my LUTs to each of the cameras and then tweak it accordingly. Please let me know if you find any weird glitches with these LUTs that I might have missed. This way I can continue to tweak and adjust these LUTs for you guys.
